During a City Council meeting on October 17, 2023, local resident Sean Wilson expressed his frustration, stating that the smell has dominated his home for the past two months.
Wilson, who resides just a quarter-mile from the bakery in Creek Brook, described the situation as “distracting” and “heavy,” pleading for reassurance about the air quality in the area. “You’re just overwhelmed by the smell of doughnuts,” he told councilors, highlighting the pressing nature of the issue as residents grapple with the bakery’s aromatic emissions.
The facility, which produces an astonishing 1 million doughnuts daily, recently proposed installing storage tanks for shortening that could significantly increase production. Currently servicing about 300 stores, the plant could expand its reach to approximately 800 locations if the tanks are permitted.
During the meeting, J.T. Couch, representing Creek Brook CML, assured council members that the bakery adheres to stringent air quality measures. “With the size of the facility, we do take extreme measures to limit our air effluents,” Couch stated, emphasizing the operational precautions in place, including dedicated hood systems for each fryer.
However, this has not alleviated the worries of residents. Councilor Shaun Toohey acknowledged the mounting complaints regarding the doughnut smell. He proposed postponing the vote on the tank installation until January to allow time for an air quality assessment, a move that residents are watching closely.
