Record 55 Teams Compete in Santa Cruz Chili Cook-Off This Weekend

UPDATE: The highly anticipated annual Chili Cook-Off is set to ignite the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on Saturday, October 25, 2024, featuring a record-breaking 55 teams vying for chili supremacy. This year promises an exhilarating showdown of meaty and vegetarian chili dishes, all while supporting a vital local cause.

Starting at 10 a.m., attendees can purchase tasting kits for $15, which include eight sample cups and a People’s Choice ballot. Public tasting kicks off at 1 p.m., with awards announced at 4 p.m. on the iconic Pirate Ship Stage. Proceeds from each tasting kit will benefit Haven of Hope, a nonprofit dedicated to aiding current and former foster youth since 1998.

Chili enthusiasts will have plenty to savor, with awards for categories like Best Amateur Red, Best Professional Vegetarian Red, and the coveted People’s Choice award. Defending champions include the Ric’s Righteous team from San Jose, who triumphed in both the Professional Vegetarian and Professional Meat categories, the Smokin Hot Chili team from Campbell, and Veggin’ Out from Sunnyvale, known for their excellence in amateur chili.
