UPDATE: Delaware County’s own Ralph Galati has been appointed as the grand marshal for the 11th annual Philadelphia Veterans Day Parade, taking place on November 9, 2025. The parade is set to commence at noon at 21st Street and Ben Franklin Parkway, culminating at Eakins Oval. This year’s celebration is especially poignant as it honors Galati, a Vietnam veteran and former POW who has dedicated his life to advocating for veterans.
The festivities will run from noon to 4 p.m., featuring a vibrant festival with food, drinks, and family-friendly activities alongside the parade. Galati will lead a group of distinguished 2025 Hometown Heroes, including Joe Eastman, Vanessa Morbeck, Gerald Tempesta, Mary McCorvey, and Daniel Lee, each symbolizing the resilience of Philadelphia’s veteran community.
In a prelude to the parade, the documentarian American Veterans Media will host a screening of “The Ralph Galati Story” on November 7 at 7 p.m. at The Mandeville Hall Teletorium at Saint Joseph’s University. This feature-length film chronicles Galati’s extraordinary journey as a Vietnam combat pilot and his harrowing experience as a POW in the notorious “Hanoi Hilton.” Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the premiere, followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers.
Galati expressed his excitement about the upcoming events, stating, “I’m honored and excited to represent veterans, especially Vietnam Veterans, in the city that I was born and raised.” His humility and advocacy for veterans have made him a beloved figure in the community, as noted by documentary director Shawn Swords, who remarked, “In the veterans world, he is a true rock star.”
The parade marks a significant moment for Galati, as it is only the second time he will participate in a parade since returning from Vietnam in 1973. He emphasized his wish to walk alongside fellow veterans rather than ride in a special vehicle, stating, “I keep thinking about all my comrades who didn’t get to come home.”
As the parade approaches, the community is buzzing with anticipation. The event not only honors those who served but also fosters a spirit of togetherness and gratitude.
For those interested in the documentary, “The Ralph Galati Story” will also be available for streaming after Thanksgiving, with DVDs offered on the American Veterans Media website. The organization will be present at the Veterans Fair on November 9, providing attendees with an opportunity to meet the filmmakers and learn more about their projects.
