PS5 Surges to 84.2 Million Sold as Sony Reports Revenue Boost

UPDATE: The PlayStation 5 (PS5) has officially reached a staggering 84.2 million units sold, as Sony’s latest financial results reveal a significant revenue increase in its gaming division. This news comes just as the console marks its fifth anniversary, showcasing its strong performance in the competitive gaming market.

In the last quarter, which ended on September 30, 2025, the PS5 sold 3.9 million units, narrowing the gap to the PlayStation 4 (PS4), which currently sits at 86 million units sold. This rapid growth indicates that the PS5 is on track to potentially surpass its predecessor’s lifetime sales in the upcoming months, especially with the holiday season approaching.

Sony’s Game & Network Services division has reported a surge in revenue, reflecting not only robust PS5 sales but also an increase in monthly active users for PlayStation Plus, which rose from 116 million to 119 million users. Alongside this, a total of 80.3 million pieces of software were sold across both the PS5 and PS4 in the second quarter of 2025, marking a notable increase from 77.7 million during the same period last year.

The popularity of exclusive titles is also contributing to the PS5’s success. Notably, the latest game, Ghost of Yotei, has sold 3.3 million copies within its first month. This trend is further amplified by the recent price hikes, which have not deterred consumers.

As the gaming landscape evolves, the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 is also noteworthy, with the console breaking sales records by selling 5.54 million units in its latest quarter. The competition is fierce, but the PS5’s performance suggests a strong hold in the market.

With the holiday shopping season just around the corner, sales for both hardware and software are expected to receive a significant boost. Industry analysts predict that the PS5 could soon overtake the PS4 in total lifetime sales, a remarkable milestone for Sony.
