UPDATE: Project Fire Buddies has just been awarded a $60,000 gala at the new Hollywood Casino Joliet, a significant boost that promises to enhance its efforts in supporting children battling severe illnesses. Founded by firefighter/paramedic Kurt DeGroot in Oak Forest, Illinois, Project Fire Buddies has grown to over 170 chapters in 15 states. The organization specializes in delivering tailored gifts, supportive visits, and unforgettable experiences to children facing life-threatening diseases. DeGroot’s mission began a decade ago out of a desire to spread joy when he noticed how children perked up during visits from firefighters.
The gala, which will take place in the fall, will be held at the Hollywood Casino Joliet’s new 10,000-square-foot event center. It will accommodate 400 guests and feature food, beverages, and professional support. The Hollywood team will provide 40 hours of volunteer assistance for the event, underscoring their commitment to community engagement.
Ruben Warren, vice president and general manager of Hollywood Joliet, emphasized the substantial impact Project Fire Buddies has had on local families. “Through a review committee, Project Fire Buddies stood out for its long-standing commitment to the region,” Warren stated. “This event giveaway can make a difference for its important work.”
DeGroot expressed his gratitude, stating, “For them to do that and select us was an absolute honor. It shows they care about the most vulnerable in their community.” The gala is expected to raise critical funds that will directly benefit sick children, with some families likely in attendance.
In addition to this gala, Project Fire Buddies is organizing its own annual event on February 7, 2025, at the Tinley Park Convention Center, anticipating up to 1,500 attendees. DeGroot shared the significance of this event, noting, “Sometimes kids are healthy enough to come and sometimes it’s a night out for mom and dad — either way, I feel like they deserve it.”
The organization has a powerful personal connection for DeGroot, who has involved his family in its mission since its inception. In the early days, his children agreed to limit their Christmas presents to ensure more could go to children in need. “This would have failed were it not for my family,” he emphasized.
