URGENT UPDATE: A police sergeant from the Antioch Police Department was injured early Friday morning when a suspected drunk driver collided with a patrol car, sending both individuals to the hospital. The incident occurred just before 2:00 AM at the intersection of A Street and W. 10th Street.
Authorities report that the 31-year-old driver, suspected of driving under the influence, was also hospitalized following the crash. Both the sergeant and the suspect have since been released and are expected to recover.
Lieutenant Joe Njoroge confirmed that officers were on the scene due to a prior crash that had taken place around 1:00 AM. While providing traffic control, the suspect sped into the driver’s side of the patrol vehicle. “The sergeant was assisting at the scene of the earlier incident when he was struck,” Njoroge stated.
Emergency responders from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District quickly arrived to assist both individuals from their vehicles. The driver was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI and speeding, although jail records did not reflect his custody status as of Friday afternoon.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about impaired driving in the area. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected drunk drivers to prevent further tragedies.
As investigations continue, police are reminding drivers to prioritize safety and avoid driving under the influence. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
