Pierce County Invests $857,250 in Urgent Eco-Tourism Boost for Wilkeson

UPDATE: In a significant move to revitalize local tourism, the Pierce County Council has just announced an investment of $857,250 for Wilkeson’s Eco-Tourism and Conservation Project. This funding, confirmed on October 21, aims to enhance Coke Oven Park and protect nearby natural lands following the recent Fairfax Bridge closure, which has severely impacted access to the area.

Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello emphasized the critical importance of this investment, stating, “This investment expands public access to our region’s incredible natural beauty while supporting local economic opportunities vital to the Wilkeson community.” This initiative is designed to not only bolster tourism but also stabilize the town’s economy, which has faced challenges due to decreased visitor numbers.

The project plans include the development of new hiking trails, a historic mining tour, and the potential for campsites across 139 newly acquired acres. These enhancements aim to preserve the Wilkeson Creek ecosystem while offering visitors a chance to explore the rich history of the area.

Mayor-elect Jayme Peloli, who spearheads the Wilkeson’s Way Forward campaign, is optimistic about the future. She stated, “Through this investment, we’re creating a space where people can connect with nature and explore Wilkeson’s history.” This sentiment reflects the town’s commitment to improving outdoor spaces and encouraging recreational activities that support education and the local economy.

Funding for this initiative is partially provided by the Pierce County Conservation Futures program, which is dedicated to preserving land for wildlife, recreation, and community green space. This program is essential in safeguarding the region’s natural resources while fostering community-driven development.

As this project unfolds, local residents and businesses are hopeful for a resurgence in tourism, which is vital for the community’s economic health. Visitors can expect to see exciting changes in the coming months as the development progresses.
