UPDATE: The Orono High School Athletic Hall of Fame is set to honor five outstanding individuals this Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 3:30 PM. This urgent ceremony promises to celebrate the remarkable contributions of two former coaches, a stellar athlete, and two dedicated community members.
The induction takes place at the high school just before the boys and girls Red Riot basketball games, adding a festive atmosphere to the event. Among the inductees are Bob Cimbollek and John Giffin, both celebrated for their coaching excellence in Orono basketball. Cimbollek, who led the boys’ team to two state championships in 1967 and 1969, boasts an impressive record of 106-32 during his tenure. His legacy includes coaching at Bangor High School and winning a total of five state championships throughout his career.
Following Cimbollek, Giffin took the reins as boys’ basketball coach, achieving remarkable success with a perfect 22-0 championship season in 1973. Giffin’s outstanding leadership earned him statewide recognition as coach of the year on two occasions.
The ceremony will also honor Jeff Mateja, a standout three-sport athlete from the class of 1997. Mateja excelled in soccer, indoor, and outdoor track, setting multiple school records and winning individual state titles. He continued his athletic journey by running track at Bentley University.
In recognition of their extensive volunteer work, Diann and Billy Libby will be inducted in the special contributor category. Their commitment to Orono athletics includes years of coaching, event officiating, and supporting youth sports. Diann Libby has been instrumental in various roles, including serving as a middle school track coach and managing concessions for the booster club. Meanwhile, Billy Libby has been the voice of Orono sports, announcing football games for nearly 20 years.
This induction ceremony is not just a celebration of athletic achievements, but a testament to the strong community spirit in Orono. The involvement of these dedicated individuals has profoundly impacted local sports and set a high standard for future generations.
As Saturday approaches, excitement builds in the community. The Orono High School Athletic Department invites everyone to witness this heartfelt tribute to those who have shaped the school’s athletic legacy.
