UPDATE: An Ohio State Trooper tragically lost his life today while assisting a disabled semi-truck on State Route 11 in Mahoning County. Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton, aged 40, was struck at approximately 11:52 a.m. while inside his marked patrol car, which had its emergency lights activated.
The incident unfolded when a Mack Granite truck, driven by 35-year-old Ryan Rach, collided with the rear of Cayton’s cruiser, pushing it into the incapacitated semi-truck. The driver of the disabled vehicle, Jesus Herrera Vasquez, was standing nearby and was also hit. Cayton was pronounced dead at the scene, while Vasquez was airlifted to a hospital for urgent medical care. Rach reportedly sustained no injuries.
In response to this devastating loss, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff across Mahoning County, including at the Ohio Statehouse and the Vern Riffe Center, until sunset on the day of Cayton’s funeral.
