Officers Rescue Toddler and Dog from Burning Apartment Fire

URGENT UPDATE: Two heroic police officers in Milpitas, California, have saved a 3-year-old girl and a dog from a burning apartment building. The dramatic rescue, captured on police body cameras, unfolded less than two minutes after the initial emergency call on February 21.

Police officers Trevon Hartley and Ricardo Barragan responded swiftly to the scene. Upon arrival, they were met with heavy smoke and flames blocking entry to the second-floor apartment where the family was trapped. Officer Hartley described the scene as chaotic: “There was a small hallway leading up to the second floor. The door was fully engulfed in flames. Just smoke everywhere.”

As the fire intensified, the officers formulated a rescue plan. Hartley, a father himself, was laser-focused on saving the child. “I didn’t hesitate… If you drop this kid, I’m going to catch her,” he stated, exemplifying the urgency of the situation.

The officers instructed the girl’s parents to drop their daughter into Hartley’s waiting arms. He executed the catch flawlessly. Barragan added, “You could feel the heat. You could see the smoke… we need to do something now because if we don’t, something bad can happen.”

Immediately after rescuing the girl, the family’s dog was also tossed from the balcony. “I was like, ‘Oh, there’s a dog now,’” Barragan recalled. The officers caught the dog as well, showcasing their commitment to saving all lives involved.

Firefighters arrived shortly after to evacuate the remaining tenants of the building. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, and all occupants were safely rescued.

Both officers, raised in Milpitas and familiar with the apartment complex, are being recognized for their bravery in this life-threatening situation. They emphasize their actions were simply part of their duty as first responders. “We just did what had to be done to save lives,” they remarked.
