URGENT UPDATE: Mo’ne Davis has officially made history by being drafted 10th overall in the inaugural Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) draft, which took place on Thursday night. This landmark event saw an impressive 600 women from 10 countries vie for a place in the league.
Davis, who first captured national attention as a star pitcher in the Little League World Series, expressed her excitement after being selected by Los Angeles. “I feel good. It was in shock. I didn’t think I was gonna go that early just because my arm is messed up, but it feels great,” she stated. Family and friends celebrated the momentous occasion at the Marian Anderson Recreation Center in South Philadelphia.
“She really livin’ her dream. I’m excited for her,” said Davis’ mother, Lakeisha McLean. “Anything is possible. Girls can do what guys can do.”
At just 24 years old, Davis made history as the first girl to earn a win and pitch a shutout in the Little League World Series, later gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated as the first Little Leaguer to do so. Reflecting on her journey, she remarked, “It’s the next chapter of my life… having this league come up at the perfect time, it feels great.”
The draft was attended by Justine Siegel, co-founder of the WPBL, who highlighted the significance of this moment for women in sports. “I wanted to be at this party because I’ve seen Mo’ne grow up and I’m really excited to have this dream for her, to know that she can get back on the field and play the game she loves,” Siegel said.
Davis is eager to kickstart her professional career, stating, “With women coming into the league, I’m very excited about that, so I can’t wait to just get out there and just play my hardest and put on some good competition for the fans.”
The WPBL is set to launch its debut season in August 2026, featuring four teams: Los Angeles, New York, Boston, and San Francisco. As this groundbreaking league prepares to take shape, the new opportunities for women in sports are generating excitement and hope across the globe.
