UPDATE: The Minnesota women’s basketball team faced a tough defeat against the Kansas Jayhawks, losing 63-57 in a nail-biting road game on November 8, 2023. This marks Minnesota’s first loss of the season, leaving them at 4-1 overall.
The Gophers struggled early, shooting a dismal 17.6% from the field in the first quarter, allowing Kansas to build a commanding 10-point lead. However, Minnesota rebounded in the second quarter, outscoring the Jayhawks 19-11 and briefly taking a 25-23 lead.
Despite their efforts, the Gophers fell behind again in the second half, with Kansas maintaining the advantage. Minnesota managed to tie the game at 49-all, and narrowed the gap to 59-57 with just 36 seconds left on the clock. Ultimately, Kansas sealed the victory by converting free throws in the closing moments.
Leading the charge for Minnesota, Tori McKinney scored 14 points, followed closely by Mara Braun with 13 points and Grace Grocholski adding 12 points. The Gophers finished the game with a shooting percentage of 34.4% and struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 5 of 23 attempts (21.7%).
Next, the Minnesota Gophers will head to the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship tournament in Nassau, Bahamas. Their first matchup will be against South Florida at 3 p.m. on November 13, 2023, followed by a game against either Harvard or Alabama on November 15.
