Mikie Sherrill’s Inauguration Set for Newark, Breaking 235-Year Tradition

BREAKING: In a historic move, Mikie Sherrill will hold her inauguration as the next governor of New Jersey at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark on January 20, 2024. This decision breaks a 235-year tradition of inaugurations being held in Trenton, marking a significant shift in New Jersey’s political landscape.

Sherrill announced the venue change earlier today, stating her desire to begin her administration in Essex County, where she has lived with her family. “I couldn’t be more honored to be sworn in as your next governor and begin my administration in the Gateway City,” her statement reads. The event will also see newly elected Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell take the oath of office.

NJPAC, with a capacity of 2,800 seats, surpasses the Patriots Theater at Trenton’s War Memorial, the traditional inauguration site since 1932. Sherrill’s inauguration marks the first time a first-term governor has been sworn in outside of Trenton since William Livingston took his oath in Princeton in 1790.

The choice of NJPAC reflects Sherrill’s commitment to inclusivity and representation. “For more than a year, I’ve been up and down this state on a mission to deliver for all New Jerseyans,” she stated. “Leadership means listening to the people about what keeps them up at night.”

Local leaders quickly praised Sherrill’s decision. Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. commented, “It is such an honor that Gov-Elect Mikie Sherrill has chosen to be sworn into office in her home county of Essex. It will be an excellent opportunity to display all that Newark and Essex have to offer.”

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka added, “As New Jersey’s largest city, Newark is an appropriate setting for such a momentous occasion.” He emphasized the city’s rich history of immigration, diversity, and democratic values, highlighting the significance of this inauguration.

Sherrill, who celebrates her 54th birthday just a day before her inauguration, has been a vocal advocate for lower costs and a more transparent government. Her leadership style promises to prioritize listening to the concerns of New Jersey residents, a theme she reiterated in her statements.

As the 57th governor of New Jersey, Sherrill’s inauguration will not only be a milestone for her but a pivotal moment for the state, showcasing the potential for change. Residents and supporters are eagerly anticipating the event, which is set to shine a spotlight on Newark’s vibrant culture and community.
