BREAKING: Mike Berney, the Executive Director of Palouse River Counseling, has announced his retirement effective December 2023. After over 30 years at the helm, Berney will hand leadership to Kathleen Stewardson, the current Clinical Director, following a national search by the organization.
This transition marks a significant milestone for the Pullman-based nonprofit, which Berney helped transform from its origins as Whitman County Mental Health into a robust independent behavioral health center. Under his leadership, the organization has expanded its services and staff from approximately 20 to over 40, including psychologists, counselors, and social workers.
Berney’s tenure has seen monumental shifts in the perception of mental health, with an increasing acceptance of behavioral health as a crucial component of overall healthcare. He reflects on the evolution with pride, stating, “There’s been a culture shift around behavioral health in a positive direction.”
The clinic now offers a wide range of outpatient services, including individual therapy, crisis intervention, and substance abuse treatment, catering to adults, children, and families across Whitman County. Berney credits the organization’s growth to its ability to meet clients where they are, utilizing a sliding scale payment system to make care accessible.
As Berney prepares to step down, he expresses optimism about the future of Palouse River Counseling and the role it will play in the community. “We’ve got a great group of people that work here,” he said. He believes that Stewardson will continue to enhance the availability of behavioral health services for residents of Pullman and beyond.
The progress made in improving relationships between the center, primary care practitioners, and local law enforcement has been remarkable, enhancing the overall response to community mental health needs.
This leadership change is not just a transition; it represents a new chapter in the ongoing mission to destigmatize mental health issues and promote comprehensive care. As the community reflects on Berney’s legacy, the emphasis on mental health continues to gain momentum, making this a pivotal moment for Palouse River Counseling.
