UPDATE: Marin Catholic’s fairy tale basketball season has come to a devastating end. The Wildcats, ranked No. 8, were eliminated by the No. 9 King’s Academy from Sunnyvale in the opening round of the NorCal Division-I boys basketball championships on July 15, 2023, with a final score of 85-73.
The defeat occurred at Marin Catholic’s home court in Kentfield, leaving players and fans reeling from the unexpected turn of events. First-year head coach Kevin Vasquez emphasized that the Wildcats should hold their heads high despite the loss. “What an incredible season,” Vasquez stated. “I told the team, don’t let one game take anything away from what we did. It was truly a magical season.”
Marin Catholic finished the season with an impressive record of 24-5, overcoming expectations after not being favored to win the MCAL title. The Wildcats soared to new heights, winning the MCAL banner and advancing to the North Coast Section open division playoffs before making it to the NorCal D-I playoffs.
In a thrilling match, Marin Catholic initially led 40-37 at halftime, driven by senior Oliver Myers, who scored 16 points, including three pivotal three-pointers. “I think we took them by surprise a little bit,” said senior captain Joe Hammond. “But they were a very, very skilled team.”
The game shifted dramatically in the second half. King’s Academy, the defending D-III NorCal champions, showcased their depth and skill, with five players scoring in double figures, led by Adrian Barnett, who notched 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds. “We lost to a very good team without a doubt,” Vasquez acknowledged.
Despite a brief resurgence, with the score tied at 58-58 early in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats struggled to maintain their lead. King’s Academy capitalized on missed shots and turned rebounds into fastbreak opportunities, pulling away in the final minutes.
Other notable contributions came from senior Micah Pierce, who scored 10 points and led the team with six rebounds, while Chase Williams, Jack Herman, and Bentley Morrow chipped in with vital points. “There were a lot of sad kids in that locker room,” Vasquez added. “But when they are able to look back on the season without emotion, they are going to realize what they accomplished.”
As Marin Catholic reflects on this season, the emotional impact of their journey is palpable. The team not only exceeded expectations but also laid the groundwork for future success. The experience gained will undoubtedly serve them well in the coming years, leaving fans hopeful for what lies ahead.
With this loss, Marin Catholic’s season may have ended, but the memories and achievements will resonate for a long time to come.
