DEVILS LAKE, ND – In an electrifying showdown, the defending state champion Langdon Area/Munich has just secured the Region 2B volleyball title, defeating Park River/Fordville-Lankin with scores of 25-9, 25-15, 25-13. This decisive victory, confirmed just moments ago, propels the Cardinals into another state tournament, reinforcing their status as a powerhouse in North Dakota volleyball.
The match unfolded at the Region 2B title game held on July 27, 2023, where Langdon Area/Munich initially dominated, only to face a brief challenge in the third set. After trailing 7-5, the Cardinals rallied spectacularly to establish a commanding 19-9 lead, ultimately sealing the match with a block from Kemi Morstad.
Coach Rich Olson attributed the team’s success to their defensive prowess and strong serving. “We were sparked by our defense tonight, there’s no question,” Olson stated. “We had some outstanding digs and won some of the longer rallies, too.” His praise extended to sophomore serve specialist Liv Prouty, who played a crucial role in the team’s comeback.
With this win, Langdon Area/Munich improves its record to an impressive 36-5, while Park River/Fordville-Lankin falls to 22-14. Despite the loss, coach Nicole Wollangk highlighted her team’s competitive spirit, noting their growth throughout the season, including a previous victory over Langdon earlier this year.
The match showcased standout performances, particularly from Hilary Haaven, who recorded 15 kills and 23 digs, and Mya Swanson, who contributed seven kills and five aces. For Park River, Lily Skibicki was notable with 17 digs.
As Langdon Area/Munich prepares for the upcoming state tournament, anticipation builds around their performance in the new three-class format, marking a significant change from last year’s two-class system. “We’re playing for each other, and that’s fun,” Olson remarked, emphasizing the team’s chemistry and unity.
Meanwhile, in a parallel matchup, Benson County triumphed over New Rockford-Sheyenne in the third-place game, setting up a last-chance opportunity for a state berth. Benson County will face the Region 1 runner-up on July 29, 2023, in Jamestown, further heightening the stakes for teams looking to make their mark in the postseason.
