UPDATE: James Donald “Jim” Early, a beloved educator and community leader, has passed away at the age of 87. He died peacefully on December 18, 2025, marking the end of a life dedicated to service, education, and family in Waterford, New York.

Jim Early was born on July 3 and celebrated his birthday joyfully on Independence Day. He was the third of five children of the late Joseph A. Early, Esq. and Loretto Powers Early. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth M. Early and a large extended family, including numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

Jim’s legacy extends beyond his family. He was a dedicated educator who began his career in education as a Guidance Counselor at St. Mary’s Academy in Glens Falls. In August 1967, he started teaching English Composition at Hudson Valley Community College, where he inspired countless students until his retirement in December 1999. Following this, he served as the Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford for a decade.

A proud member of the community, Jim volunteered with the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department for over 57 years. He was also a passionate musician, serving as the organist at Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Jim is remembered fondly by his daughters: Grace E. Boss, Jane F. Early, Margaret H. Warner, and Kathleen L. Early, as well as his late daughter Mary Ellen Early, who passed away earlier this year on June 26, 2025. He leaves behind nine cherished grandchildren.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, followed by a service at noon at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford. Family and friends can pay their respects at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Hospice Community or the Waterford Fire Department, honoring Jim’s commitment to community service.
