Honolulu Airport Launches Nightly Runway Closures for Upgrades

UPDATE: Travelers heading to Honolulu should prepare for significant changes as the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport initiates nightly runway closures starting tomorrow. Runway 4R will be closed from 8 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. through Saturday, December 20, 2024, as part of essential upgrades, according to the Hawai’i Department of Transportation (HDOT).

This urgent development means that passengers flying into the airport might need to adjust their travel schedules. The closures are aimed at completing the final phase of the HNL Runway and Taxiway Shoulder Rehabilitation project. While these upgrades are critical for maintaining safety and operational efficiency, they will inevitably lead to increased noise levels for nearby residents.

Late arrivals will be rerouted to Runway 8L or the Reef Runway, potentially shifting the sound of jet engines to the ‘Ewa Plain, impacting the neighborhood with a cacophony of aircraft noise during the night. HDOT emphasizes that the work will take place during off-peak hours to minimize disruption to regular flight schedules.

The project, which began in February 2024, has faced delays due to unpredictable weather conditions, pushing the completion date beyond initial projections. HDOT acknowledges the inconvenience caused by the closures and expresses appreciation for the community’s understanding.

“HDOT appreciates the community’s patience and understanding while the needed work is conducted to ensure safe operations at HNL,” the department stated in their announcement.

As travelers and residents brace for these changes, the airport’s commitment to enhancing safety and infrastructure remains a priority. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about ongoing developments and to share updates with others affected by these changes.

For those planning to fly into or out of Honolulu, it’s crucial to monitor flight schedules and prepare for possible delays during the upgrade period. Stay tuned for more updates as this situation develops.
