BREAKING: A homeowner fatally shot an intruder during an alleged break-in early Monday morning in Somerset Township. This urgent incident unfolded around 2 a.m. on the 100 block of Locust Street, as reported by County District Attorney Tom Leiden.
Authorities confirm that the homeowner was awakened by loud banging on his kitchen window. Upon investigation, he discovered a male intruder attempting to break into his home. The intruder reportedly shattered a window and was warned that the homeowner was armed before the shooting occurred. The homeowner shot the intruder in the head, and the body was later found by responding Pennsylvania State Police (PSP).
UPDATE: The homeowner has been detained for questioning, but preliminary findings suggest he acted in self-defense. District Attorney Leiden states, “No charges have been filed at this time, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.” Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and have interviewed several witnesses.
Local residents expressed their shock at the incident. Neighbor JD Ross described the situation as “scary,” emphasizing that he had lived in the area for years and considered it a safe neighborhood. “This is a nice neighborhood. We raised our kids here. I still don’t know what happened, but it’s tragic,” Ross added.
As the investigation progresses, authorities will release the identity of the intruder once next-of-kin notifications are made. For now, residents are urged to remain vigilant but assured that there is no immediate danger to the community.
