UPDATE: Hillsborough County’s Duffels of Dignity program is celebrating a monumental three-year anniversary with a record-breaking surge in support for local foster children. Just this October, the initiative distributed an unprecedented number of duffel bags filled with essential items, reinforcing its mission to provide dignity to children in foster care.
Since its inception in October 2020, Duffels of Dignity has transformed the way foster children manage their belongings, replacing trash bags with over 5,587 duffel bags and suitcases. The program has become a beacon of community care, demonstrating the power of generosity and compassion.
This month marked a significant milestone, as hundreds of volunteers came together to support the cause. A notable highlight was the recent International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Conference held in Tampa, which selected Duffels of Dignity for its official service project. Thanks to a substantial contribution from Tampa Electric, over 300 filled duffel bags were assembled for distribution.
In addition to these efforts, the Sewing Group at Arise Church donated 25 handcrafted quilts, while the nonprofit Madi’s Movement provided duffels to young adults transitioning out of foster care. These collaborative efforts underscore the community’s commitment to supporting vulnerable children.
The growth of Duffels of Dignity is largely attributed to the tireless efforts of volunteers, local businesses donating supplies, and generous financial contributions. Those interested in making a difference can find information on how to contribute at HCFL.gov/DuffelsOfDignity.
This surge of support not only provides essential items but also fosters a sense of belonging and care for children navigating the complexities of foster care. The community’s response speaks volumes about the collective effort to ensure that every child feels valued and respected.
As the program continues to expand, community members are encouraged to remain engaged and support this impactful initiative. Stay tuned for more updates on how you can help foster dignity and support the children of Hillsborough County.
