Hawai‘i Celebrates Opening of 100th Pre-K Classroom on Oʻahu

UPDATE: Hawai‘i has just reached a pivotal educational milestone with the opening of its 100th public pre-kindergarten classroom at Maunawili Elementary School on Oʻahu. This landmark achievement marks a significant step toward universal access to early education for the state’s youngest residents, affectionately known as keiki.

The announcement was made by Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke, a central figure in the Ready Keiki initiative, during a ceremony held earlier today. The initiative aims to provide all children in Hawai‘i with the foundational skills needed to thrive, ensuring families can access trusted early education regardless of their location.

“This just shows Hawai‘i’s commitment to every child, every family, and every community,” Lt. Gov. Luke stated. “Just a few years ago, there were only a few dozen public pre-K classrooms statewide. Now, we’re celebrating our 100th.”

The expansion of public pre-K classrooms has surged from just 37 in 2022 to a remarkable 117 classrooms across 89 locations statewide as of today. This growth highlights the government’s dedication to enhancing educational access for families and children across the islands.

The latest classroom at Maunawili can accommodate up to 20 students aged 3 and 4, with priority given to children in foster care, those from families experiencing homelessness, or those in other at-risk situations. Families interested in enrollment can apply for a seat or join the waitlist through the EOEL’s website, or by calling (808) 784-5350.

The Executive Office on Early Learning (EOEL) emphasizes that their mission is far from complete. “We’re proud of how far we’ve come, and we know our work continues,” stated EOEL Director Yuuko Arikawa-Cross. “Every new classroom represents a doorway to opportunity for families. Our goal is to meet families where they are and ensure every keiki in Hawai‘i has access to a strong start.”

The opening of this classroom is part of a broader initiative that has seen recent expansions across Hawaiʻi, Kauaʻi, Maui, and Oʻahu. Notable additions include classrooms at Kalaniʻanaʻole Elementary & Intermediate on Hawaii Island and Hāna High and Elementary on Maui, which features a Hawaiian language classroom. These educational spaces are laying the groundwork for the next generation of learners in Hawai‘i.

As the state continues to prioritize early education, the newly opened classroom in Maunawili demonstrates a commitment to providing quality educational options for families. The EOEL is dedicated to its mission of expanding access and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story and the ongoing expansion of pre-K classrooms throughout Hawai‘i. This initiative not only shapes the future of education in the state but also impacts countless families looking for quality early learning environments for their children.
