UPDATE: Hailey Lewis has officially taken over as the new mayor of Moscow, marking a significant shift in the city’s leadership. The ceremony took place during the City Council meeting on November 27, 2023, where former mayor Art Bettge delivered his farewell address, expressing gratitude for his four years in office.
Bettge, who chose not to run for re-election, highlighted the city’s growth and accomplishments, including the construction of a new bridge and roundabout. He stated, “The city is doing well and it’s growing and it’s prospering,” emphasizing the ongoing efforts to enhance community resources. Key projects during his tenure included the addition of three full-time paramedics and a climate action plan. However, he acknowledged the challenges faced, notably the tragic 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, which drew negative international attention to the city.
Lewis, a lifelong Moscow resident and City Council member since 2021, vowed to serve her community with dedication. “I am incredibly grateful and I will never once take for granted the trust that has been placed in me,” she declared during her inaugural speech. Her commitment resonates deeply as she steps into her role at the helm of the city.
Joining Lewis are three newly elected council members: Evan Holmes, Sage McCetich, and Scott Sumner. Each member expressed enthusiasm for their roles, with Sumner stating, “I think healthy disagreement makes us better and leads to better decisions.”
Holmes urged the public to hold the council accountable, reinforcing their mission to prioritize the well-being of all residents. McCetich, reflecting on his roots, emphasized the importance of community support as he embarks on this new chapter.
Bettge’s tenure will be remembered not only for its achievements but also for its obstacles, including a decrease in state revenue sharing. He expressed confidence in Lewis and the new council’s ability to address future challenges.
As Moscow enters this new era of leadership, residents are encouraged to engage with their elected officials and contribute to the ongoing dialogue about the city’s future. The new council is poised to tackle issues head-on, ensuring that the community’s voice remains at the forefront of decision-making.
Stay tuned for updates as Moscow embarks on this transformative journey under the leadership of Hailey Lewis and her team.
