UPDATE: The highly anticipated 2025 West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta is underway, captivating attendees with vibrant costumes and giant gourds in Tualatin’s Lake of the Commons this Sunday afternoon. Participants are racing in carved-out pumpkins, showcasing their creativity and competitive spirit.
Boaters dressed as Captain America, Guy Fieri, and even a hot dog paddled through the water, making a splash in this beloved annual event. This year marks the 21st edition of the regatta, which not only tests speed but also the skill of avoiding waterlogging in their pumpkin vessels.
The regatta kicked off at 1:00 PM local time, drawing crowds eager to witness the quirky spectacle. Among the standout participants was Parker Johnson, who wowed the judges with his costume as the Very Hungry Caterpillar, taking home the top prize in the costume contest. “I was just chatting with my family in the car, brainstorming ideas. My dad thought up the idea of a caterpillar eating its way out of the pumpkin,” Johnson told Nexstar’s KOIN.
The event is organized by the Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers, who provide the giant pumpkins and essential supplies, such as paddles and life vests, for the paddlers. All participants must be at least 18 years old and are required to don family-friendly costumes, adding to the festive atmosphere.
As the event continues into the afternoon, spectators are encouraged to cheer on their favorite teams and enjoy the lively community spirit that fills the air. The regatta is not just a race; it’s a celebration of creativity and fun, making it a must-see event for families and pumpkin enthusiasts alike.
Stay tuned for more updates as the regatta progresses and additional highlights emerge from this unique Oregon tradition.
