Franklin G. Schappell, 91, Passes Away; Funeral Services Scheduled

BREAKING: Franklin G. Schappell, a beloved member of the Perry Twp. community, has passed away at the age of 91 on December 19, 2025. His family and friends are mourning the loss of a devoted father, grandfather, and veteran.

Schappell, who was predeceased by his wife Ruth G. Schappell on July 31, 2019, leaves behind a legacy of love and service. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran and a longtime member of Zion’s Church in Perry Twp., where he contributed significantly to the church community and its cemetery maintenance.

Born and raised in Perry Twp., Franklin was the son of the late James and Edna Schappell. A graduate of Perry High School in 1952, he dedicated many years to his career at Berks Packing, where he operated a chopper and played a key role in making Berks Hot Dogs until his retirement in 1996.

Franklin’s passions extended beyond his work; he enjoyed hunting, farming, gardening, and sports. His unwavering faith was evident in his commitment to reading the Bible daily. He is survived by three sons, Rodney F. Schappell of Cumru Twp., Dennis J. Schappell (husband of Lisa Simmons) of Centre Twp., and Gregory C. Schappell (husband of Tulsa Hosmer) of Shoemakersville, as well as three daughters: Denise E. Schappell of Perry Twp., Brenda R. Zellers of Hamburg, and Patti E. Cahill (wife of Dale Cahill) of Geneva, OH. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Zion’s Church, located at 770 Zion Church Road, Hamburg, PA 19526. A viewing will precede the service from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Friends and family are encouraged to gather to celebrate Franklin’s life and legacy. Burial will take place at Zion’s Cemetery in Perry Twp.
