UPDATE: The former Kenyon-Wanamingo Elementary School is set to become a vital resource for families as the new Golden Days & Little Rays Daycare and Activities Center emerges in Wanamingo, Minnesota. Owner Ruthie Welvemoed is moving forward with plans for the daycare, which has already generated significant community interest, including waiting lists for enrollment.
The transition from school to daycare comes after the school district’s announcement in January 2023 that the building would close due to declining enrollment and costly maintenance needs, including an aging roof. The building was sold in May 2023, ahead of the summer break, paving the way for this new initiative.
Welvemoed emphasizes the urgent need for childcare in this small community, noting its strategic location just off U.S. Highway 52, making it accessible for commuting families. “In our area, it’s such a need,” she stated. Once operational, the daycare will accommodate 103 children, divided into age groups for infants, toddlers, and school-aged kids, with care provided before and after school.
The daycare center is currently waiting on licensing approval from the state, with no specific timeline available for when it will open. However, Welvemoed’s family is actively addressing the building’s renovation needs, with her uncle recently retired from the roofing industry stepping in to manage repairs.
The community response has been overwhelmingly positive. “We’ve had a really great welcoming from the community about this idea,” Welvemoed shared. Even before opening, she is already planning a soft launch, gradually increasing enrollment rather than maxing out capacity immediately.
Additionally, Welvemoed envisions the center potentially extending its offerings to include programs for senior citizens, creating a space for intergenerational interaction. “I have a really big heart for younger kids as well as for senior citizens,” she explained, highlighting her desire to facilitate programs that benefit both age groups.
As the project progresses, the Wanamingo community eagerly anticipates the opening of Golden Days & Little Rays, which promises to fill a crucial childcare gap and foster connections among local families.
