UPDATE: Air Force Lt. Col. Dane Coppini from Ferndale is set to make an exhilarating flyover at the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Indianapolis Colts game on October 15, 2023, at 10 a.m. in Kansas City, Missouri. This remarkable event is part of the NFL’s Military Appreciation Month and features a formation of four jets flying overhead, a symbol of military dedication and community pride.
Coppini, a veteran pilot with 15 years of experience, is assigned to the 87th Flying Training Squadron (the “Red Bulls”) and typically operates from Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas. This is a prestigious opportunity, as his squadron applies for a limited number of flyover ceremonies each year. “We’re thrilled to represent the Air Force and honor our military during this special game,” said Coppini.
The flyover will feature two pilots per T-38C Talon, the U.S. Air Force’s primary training jet. As a dedicated instructor pilot, Coppini trains the next generation of fighter pilots, balancing flight duties with administrative responsibilities as he advances in rank. He reflected on his career, stating, “To be able to fly once or twice a day and instruct the next generation is an amazing experience, a blessing, and an honor.”
Coppini’s journey began 19 years ago when he enlisted as an “Air Force cop.” Motivated by his experiences, he pursued flight after his first deployment to Afghanistan. Over the years, he completed 10 deployments, including missions in Iraq and Africa. His mother, Carrie Coppini, expressed immense pride in her son’s accomplishments. “We’re super proud of him, and he’s a ‘high flier!’” she said, revealing that the family had been anxiously awaiting news about the flyover.
With the Chiefs’ game just hours away, excitement is building in Ferndale and across the community. “He loves Ferndale, he’s proud to be from here,” Carrie shared, highlighting how the support from his hometown has fueled his success. “I’m sure he’s thankful for everyone that’s helped him along his path.”
As fans prepare for an unforgettable game day experience, Lt. Col. Coppini’s flyover promises to be a highlight, showcasing both military excellence and the spirit of a small-town hero rising to great heights. Be sure to tune in as history takes to the skies above Arrowhead Stadium!
