Elon Musk’s xAI Launches $659M Expansion in Memphis NOW

BREAKING: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has just announced a massive $659 million expansion at its data center complex in Memphis, Tennessee. The company has filed a permit to build a new 312,000 square foot facility adjacent to its existing Colossus 2 data center, marking a significant step forward in its operations.

The proposed four-story building will rise to around 75 feet high, situated on a 79-acre site at 5414 Tulane Road. The specific purpose of the new structure remains undisclosed, but it is expected to support xAI’s rapid growth and enhance the infrastructure behind its flagship large language model, Grok. The news was first reported by the Memphis Business Journal.

This expansion comes just months after xAI launched its Colossus supercomputer in a repurposed Electrolux factory in the Boxtown district, which has been operational since January 2025. The Memphis data centers are critical to the company’s operations, with plans for a third facility across the Tennessee–Mississippi border already in the works.

Musk has previously stated that the broader campus could ultimately provide up to 2 gigawatts of compute power. This ambitious plan is bolstered by commitments from SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell, who announced at a White House event that xAI would develop 1.2 gigawatts of power specifically for its supercomputer facility.

“We will build new substations and invest in electrical infrastructure to provide stability to the area’s grid,” Shotwell stated, emphasizing the project’s importance to local energy needs.

The impact of this expansion extends beyond just technology. Shotwell highlighted that the new installation will have enough backup power to supply the entire city of Memphis and will also support the town of Southaven, Mississippi. Additionally, xAI plans to invest in local water infrastructure with state-of-the-art water recycling plants that could save approximately 4.7 billion gallons of water from the Memphis aquifer each year.

This expansion is expected to create thousands of jobs for American workers in the Memphis area, significantly benefiting the local economy. With xAI’s rapid scaling, the developments in Memphis are set to transform the region into a hub for advanced AI technology and infrastructure.

As this story develops, all eyes will be on xAI’s next moves and the broader implications for the tech industry and local communities. Stay tuned for updates on this groundbreaking expansion.
