El Cajon Standoff Ends with Arrest of Domestic Violence Suspect

UPDATE: A tense three-hour standoff in El Cajon has just concluded with the arrest of Ruben Castro, a 44-year-old man facing serious domestic violence and felony charges. The incident unfolded on October 15, 2023, at a motel located at 1368 E. Main Street after a woman called 9-1-1, reporting that her husband had assaulted and strangled her.

Authorities swiftly responded to the distress call, evacuating the victim from the motel room. However, Castro barricaded himself inside, prompting a large-scale police operation. The El Cajon Police Department confirmed that Castro was wanted for several violent felonies and violations related to sex registration, escalating the urgency of the situation.

Crisis negotiators attempted to persuade Castro to surrender, but he refused to communicate. This led to the deployment of El Cajon Police SWAT officers, who first used less-lethal tactics, including Pepper Ball rounds. Unfortunately, these efforts did not persuade Castro to exit the room.

As the standoff dragged on, police escalated their tactics by deploying a flashbang device, followed by additional Pepper Ball rounds. These measures finally succeeded in coaxing Castro out of the bathroom where he had retreated, and he was taken into custody without further incident.

According to a news release from the City of El Cajon, Castro was booked into the San Diego County Jail on multiple charges, including those stemming from the day’s events and the outstanding felony warrant.

This incident underscores the serious nature of domestic violence and the risks law enforcement faces during such confrontations. The victim’s quick action in calling for help likely prevented further harm.

As authorities continue to investigate, residents are reminded of the importance of reporting any signs of domestic violence. The community is urged to stay alert and supportive of those who might be in similar situations.
