Community Honors Veterans at Urgent Ceremony in Nahant

UPDATE: Community members gathered in Nahant on Tuesday afternoon for a poignant ceremony honoring veterans, hosted by the Nahant American Legion. The event took place at the Life Saving Station, where attendees reflected on the sacrifices made by those who served in the U.S. military.

Commander Dennis Treece welcomed the crowd, emphasizing the significance of the occasion. “The timing of this holiday is no accident,” he stated, referencing the historic moment when the guns of World War I fell silent at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918. “Today, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of our veterans who defended our nation,” Treece explained.

This gathering is not just a remembrance of history; it serves as a vital reminder of the ongoing bravery displayed by military personnel. Treece highlighted that “as long as the world remains dangerous, our military stands ready to answer the call.” His words resonated with attendees, reinforcing the continuous need for vigilance and gratitude toward those who serve.

Vice Commander Bob Fields followed with a heartfelt message about the spirit of military service. He remarked, “It is not the glory of war we praise, but rather the glory of the men and women who endure rigorous training, family separation, and the looming threat of injury.” Fields’ words struck a chord, reminding those present of the personal sacrifices made by service members.

Dana Sheehan, Veterans Service Officer for Post 215, expressed his admiration for the community’s support of veterans. “Courage is born from war, but it also thrives in peace,” he stated, urging attendees to recognize the bravery required for social and economic progress. He called for a collective effort to turn challenges into opportunities.

Carl Jenkins, Squadron Commander of the Sons of the American Legion, underscored the importance of expressing gratitude. “Saying ‘thank you for your service’ helps heal wounds from times when veterans were blamed for the conflicts they fought,” Jenkins said. He highlighted the achievements of veterans across history, from combating fascism to winning the Cold War.

Reflecting on the day’s significance, Rep. Sean Reid praised the Nahant community for its unwavering support of veterans. “Today is beautiful, a day to appreciate the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families,” Reid noted, reinforcing the local commitment to honoring those who served.

This ceremony not only celebrated past sacrifices but also fostered a renewed sense of community and respect for current and former service members. As veterans continue to face challenges, local leaders urge residents to maintain their support and appreciation for those who protect freedoms.

As the nation approaches important observances, residents are reminded of the ongoing need to honor and support veterans, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten. The event serves as a clarion call to all—recognize the bravery and dedication of those who serve, and contribute to a culture of appreciation and respect.
