“The most important psychological characteristics can be cultivated through coaching,” said Tsai. “This study tells you how crucial coaching is in generating resources that enhance athletes’ resilience and mental toughness.”
The study, published in the International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching, found that coaches who employed transformational leadership techniques created a motivational environment that aligned players with the coach’s values and goals. This method not only fosters mental toughness but also strengthens the coach-athlete relationship.
Key strategies identified include creating a task-involving climate, where athletes work towards common goals, and addressing individual needs with personalized feedback. Tsai emphasized that such approaches, typically effective in the business world, are highly applicable in sports.
“Good leadership is vital in overcoming challenges,” Tsai added. “Creating a relationship dynamic rooted in mutual respect is probably the most significant takeaway from this research.”
