URGENT UPDATE: Cheryl Jean Husby, a cherished artist and community advocate, passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on October 14, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at St. Luke’s Hospital. Her sudden passing has left a deep void in the hearts of many in the Duluth community.
Cheryl was born in Minneapolis on December 30, 1948, and was known for her vibrant spirit and artistic talents. She graduated from U-High in 1966 and later earned her B.F.A. in 1983, M.A. in 1984, and M.F.A. in 1986 from the University of Wisconsin Superior and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Her artistic contributions were widely recognized, including a first-place award in clay at the prestigious Coconut Grove Art Festival.
In her early years, Cheryl was passionate about outdoor activities, particularly harvesting wild rice and raising sled dogs. She and her husband, Bob Husby, created cherished memories while living above a bakery, where they pursued their artistic dreams. They founded Husby Pottery, which took them across the country and allowed them to enjoy the warm winters in the Florida Keys.
Cheryl’s love for her family was evident in her commitment to celebrating holidays and hosting gatherings, from New Year’s Day parties to monthly artist potlucks. She was known for her delicious apple pie and her unwavering support for her children and grandchildren, including Seth Draper and Elissa Husby.
Her involvement with the community was significant, serving on boards for the Duluth Art Institute and the Duluth Preservation Alliance. Cheryl’s legacy of service and creativity will be remembered by all who knew her.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, Bob, her children, grandsons Zane and Noah Draper, as well as her sisters and brother. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law Bruce Swango.
Visitation for Cheryl will take place on November 5, 2025, beginning at 10:00 AM at First Lutheran Church, located at 1100 E. Superior Street. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM, with a reception afterwards. Flowers are welcome, and donations in her honor can be made to the Depot Foundation and Duluth Preservation Alliance.
