UPDATE: Major League Baseball Hall of Famer CC Sabathia was celebrated today in his hometown of Vallejo, California, receiving the key to the city and being honored with “CC Sabathia Day.” The festivities occurred at Corbus Field, where the community gathered to recognize Sabathia’s outstanding contributions both on and off the field.
In a heartfelt ceremony, Sabathia and his wife, Amber Sabathia, were praised for their philanthropic efforts through the PitCCh-In Foundation. “We are proud to celebrate both CC and Amber,” said Rubén Aurelio, Superintendent of the Vallejo Unified School District. “They support our district tremendously, giving backpacks and school supplies to kids every year.”
Earlier today, the couple was also honored with a series of proclamations, and the city officially renamed a section of Gateway Drive to “CC Sabathia Way.” This recognition follows Sabathia’s recent induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in July 2023, marking him as the first Vallejo athlete to achieve this honor.
As the rain held off for the event, Sabathia reflected on his roots, expressing gratitude for the community that inspired him. “I grew up with my heroes here,” he said, choking back tears while honoring local football legend Demetrius Davis, who passed away in 2012. “I just want to say thank you to everyone in this community.”
The celebration was a who’s who of local dignitaries, coaches, and friends, all paying tribute to the couple. Vallejo Mayor Andrea Sorce emphasized the impact that CC has had on the city, stating, “It’s the story of CC Sabathia. It’s that heart and that grit and that unbelievable pride.”
In addition to speeches, attendees enjoyed a free baseball clinic hosted for local youth, showcasing Sabathia’s commitment to nurturing the next generation. “It was great to be able to do that today,” he remarked, recalling his childhood experiences with local baseball camps.
The event drew attention from various officials, including California Assemblymember Lori Wilson and Solano County Supervisor Cassandra James, who presented resolutions in honor of Sabathia’s achievements. A painting of Sabathia was also unveiled, further commemorating his legacy in Vallejo.
Sabathia’s career highlights include 251 wins and 3,093 strikeouts, with accolades like a Cy Young Award in 2007 and a World Series title with the New York Yankees in 2009. His influence extends beyond the pitcher’s mound, as he actively engages in community service, providing resources for students and families in Vallejo.
As the day wrapped up, Sabathia expressed his deep connection to Vallejo, sharing his favorite local spots and mentioning the importance of staying grounded in his roots. “I always go back to my house in the crest,” he said, adding with a laugh, “My aunt usually cooks for me, but if not, I go to Tacos Jaliscos to get some tacos.”
This celebration not only honors Sabathia’s incredible sports career but also highlights his lasting impact on the Vallejo community. As he continues to inspire future generations, Sabathia remains a beloved figure in his hometown and beyond.
