Camden Hills Wins Historic 1st State Football Championship

UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, Camden Hills has secured its first-ever state football championship, dominating Spruce Mountain with a score of 52-26 on November 15, 2023, at Edward Little High School. The Windjammers, led by senior quarterback Hollis Schwalm, showcased an explosive performance that will be remembered in school history.

The urgency was palpable as Camden Hills entered the game fueled by new banners in their gym bearing the words “Football Champions” without dates. “That needs to change,” Schwalm declared, and change it did. With five turnovers forced by the defense and a flurry of touchdowns, the Windjammers celebrated their victory at midfield, marking a historic moment for the school.

Schwalm delivered an outstanding performance, rushing for three touchdowns and throwing a fourth to teammate Justin Batty. His all-around contribution accounted for 32 points, a testament to his dual-threat capabilities. “As long as I get the ball in his hands, something good is going to happen,” said coach Chris Christie.

The Windjammers stormed ahead with a commanding 32-12 lead at halftime. Schwalm’s 67-yard touchdown run and crucial plays by teammates like Braden Beveridge, who scored and intercepted two passes, fueled their momentum. Beveridge expressed the significance of the victory, stating, “It’s amazing… we had this in our minds the entire way.”

Camden Hills finishes the season with an impressive 10-1 record, reflecting their growth as a program since becoming a full-fledged varsity team in 2009. Coach Christie highlighted the team’s unity, saying, “About four weeks ago we checked our egos and really just started playing together as a team.”

The Windjammers’ journey to the championship was marked by determination, overcoming obstacles that included a canceled season in 2015 and the challenges of building a competitive program. Now, they can finally etch their names on that coveted gym banner.

As they celebrate this monumental achievement, all eyes are on the future of Camden Hills football. With many players returning next season, including a strong cohort of freshmen and sophomores, the outlook remains bright. “The future looks pretty solid for us,” Christie affirmed.

Fans and supporters are encouraged to share their excitement for this historic victory as Camden Hills claims its rightful place in the annals of high school football history.
