Bulldogs Fencing Dominates Vassar Open, Wins All Five Bouts

UPDATE: The Yale Bulldogs men’s fencing team has kicked off the season with an impressive performance at the Vassar Open Invitational, winning all five matches just last weekend. This strong start follows a successful previous season where they finished with an 18-7 record.

The Bulldogs began their tournament with a commanding 21-6 victory against Drew University. They continued their dominance by defeating Stevens College with the same score, 21-6. The team maintained momentum, overcoming Lafayette College 19-8, Johns Hopkins University 18-9, and concluding the day with a 19-8 win against Sacred Heart University.

“After months of preparation and long morning practices, we came in hungry to compete at a high level,” said Captain Jordan Silberzweig ’27. He expressed excitement about the enthusiastic class of first-years joining the team this season.

As the Bulldogs prepare for the upcoming Ivy League Championships in 2026, Silberzweig is focused on building the positive energy established during their training. The men’s team boasts three returning NCAA Championship qualifiers: Tony Whelan ’26, Silberzweig, and Castor Kao ’28, who is currently ranked sixth in the nation in foil competition.

Meanwhile, the women’s team also made headlines over the weekend, finishing with a 6-1 record at the same tournament. They achieved dominant victories, including a stunning 21-0 win against Yeshiva University and a 20-1 victory over Lafayette College. Their only loss came narrowly against Cornell, 13-14.

“The past meet went well. We beat six teams, including Brown, which set a really good tone for the rest of the season,” said Amanda O’Donnell ’26, the women’s fencing captain. She also highlighted the return of two key starters, which will enhance their performance at the Ivy League Championships.

The Bulldogs are set to continue their season with the Tri-State Shark Showcase in Brooklyn on November 23, 2023. With both teams demonstrating exceptional skill and teamwork, the Bulldogs are proving to be a formidable force in collegiate fencing.

As the season unfolds, fans will be eagerly watching how these athletes build on their early successes. Stay tuned for more updates as the Bulldogs aim for championship glory!
