URGENT UPDATE: Boston police have arrested Michael Waterman, a 40-year-old homeless man, for armed robbery after he allegedly stole a cash register from a downtown 7-11 and threatened officers with violence. This shocking incident occurred early on July 14, 2023, shortly after 5 a.m. at 50 Summer St.
According to the Boston Police Department, officers responded to a report of a breaking and entering in progress. Upon arrival, they found the store’s front glass door shattered and the cash register missing. Just across the street, police noticed a man matching the suspect’s description.
“When officers attempted to place the suspect into handcuffs, he immediately began to resist and threatened to kill officers,” the BPD stated in an official report. Despite the suspect’s aggressive behavior, police successfully subdued him after employing multiple de-escalation tactics. The stolen cash register was recovered at the scene.
Waterman, whose last known address is the Southampton Street Shelter in Roxbury, faces multiple charges, including larceny from a building, armed robbery, breaking and entering at night, assault with a dangerous weapon, and resisting arrest.
This incident is part of a larger trend, with the BPD reporting 96 incidents in a 24-hour period ending at 10 a.m. on the same day. This included arrests for robbery, aggravated assaults, and numerous larcenies.
