UPDATE: Bay FC concluded its challenging 2023 season with a 1-0 loss to Racing Louisville on September 24, 2023, marking a disappointing end to a year fraught with internal turmoil. After a season filled with controversy, including an investigation into a “toxic” coaching environment and the dismissal of two key figures, the club finished with 14 losses, 4 wins, and 8 draws, claiming 13th place out of 14 teams in the NWSL.
The match at Racing Louisville saw Bay FC hold strong in the first half, but just three minutes into the second half, Ella Hase scored the decisive goal, sealing Bay FC’s fate. Coach Albertin Montoya, who announced he would step down after the season, expressed his gratitude to the players despite the unfortunate ending.
“We didn’t end the way we would’ve liked to, but I also have to say thank you to the players and to Bay FC,” Montoya stated. “They never stopped competing and playing for each other.”
This loss extends Bay FC’s winless streak to 15 matches, with their last victory occurring on June 7 against Portland. The team’s performance this season stands in stark contrast to their inaugural 2022 season, where they finished with an 11-14-1 record and secured 7th place in the league.
Despite the setbacks, defender Caprice Dydasco made history by completing every minute of the regular season, achieving “iron woman” status—a feat accomplished by only 40 players in league history. Dydasco’s milestone shines a light on the resilience and dedication of the team amidst the struggles.
Further change is on the horizon for Bay FC as team president Brady Stewart also announced her resignation, following a season that included a record-setting match at Oracle Park which drew over 35,000 fans. Both Stewart and Montoya had been instrumental since the club’s inception, and their departures signal a new chapter for Bay FC.
As the club prepares for the 2024 season, fans are left wondering what changes will be implemented to turn around its fortunes. The focus will now shift to rebuilding and creating a more positive environment for both players and supporters alike.
Stay tuned for more updates as Bay FC navigates this transitional period.
