Bay Area Mother, 74, Killed in Head-On Crash Near Home

UPDATE: A tragic head-on collision in San Jose has claimed the life of 74-year-old Ellen Orcutt, a beloved mother and dedicated social worker, just steps from her home on October 25. The accident occurred off Foxworthy Avenue, leaving family and friends mourning a profound loss.

According to San Jose police, the driver of an SUV attempted to overtake another vehicle, veering into the opposite lane and crashing into Orcutt’s Honda CRV. The impact was devastating, causing both vehicles to flip over. Tragically, the SUV driver also succumbed to injuries sustained in the wreck, which may have involved alcohol impairment.

“I just lost my best friend and my guiding light in this world,” said Joelle Orlando, Orcutt’s daughter, who is now grappling with the loss. She emphasized that her mother should be remembered for her beautiful life, not just how it ended. “I want her to be remembered for how she lived.”

Orcutt dedicated over 25 years to serving as a social worker for Pacific Clinics, a nonprofit focused on behavioral and mental health services. Family friend Greg Yoder, who knew her for 32 years, described her as “kind, generous, just the most selfless person I’ve ever met.” He noted her remarkable ability to assist families facing severe hardships, often drawing from her own life experiences to connect with them.

Colleagues and friends fondly referred to Orcutt as the “resource queen,” known for her compassionate nature. She would often deliver cars filled with hygiene kits, clothes, and other essentials to families in need, embodying the spirit of community support. “Our world is a little chaotic, but people like Ellen were always there to remind you that hey, life may be chaotic, but you’re okay, and we’re all going to be okay,” reflected Andrew Ford, a coworker at Pacific Clinics.

In her final email, shared by her coworkers, Orcutt expressed gratitude and hope, urging her colleagues to cherish the stories of the families they serve. “May you all be thankful and with hope for yourselves and those families that come into your life… they have a story to share and so do you. Keep hope alive. Take good care,” she wrote.

As the community grapples with this heartbreaking loss, Joelle Orlando vows to continue her mother’s mission of helping others. “Don’t forget how important life is and to cherish every moment you have because you never know when it’s going to be taken,” she urged.

This tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the impact one individual can have on many. As investigations continue, the community reflects on the legacy of Ellen Orcutt—a legacy of kindness, compassion, and unwavering support.
