Angelo Ross Jr. Passes Away at 86, Leaving a Lasting Legacy

URGENT UPDATE: Angelo Rafael Ross Jr., a beloved educator and coach, has passed away at the age of 86, peacefully at his home in Santa Cruz, California, surrounded by family on November 3, 2025. His death marks the loss of a cherished figure who profoundly impacted the Central Coast community through decades of teaching and coaching.

Born on September 23, 1939, in Santa Cruz, Angelo was the youngest of two children. He grew up in a nurturing environment filled with laughter and family, which he later mirrored in his own classrooms and athletic teams. Known for his exceptional ability to connect with young people, Angelo taught U.S. History, Civics, and Physical Education at Mission Hill Junior High School from 1964 to 1999.

Angelo’s legacy extends beyond the classroom. He was a prominent figure in local athletics, coaching various sports for over five decades. His coaching career peaked at Palma High School in Salinas, where he contributed to an impressive record of 28 league championships and 11 CCS titles. His remarkable achievements included a 48-game unbeaten streak, solidifying his status as a local sports legend.

In a heartfelt statement, his family expressed gratitude for the exceptional care provided by his long-time caregiver, “Tootsie,” and thanked the medical professionals who supported him throughout his life. They also acknowledged the unwavering love and support from friends and family, including the entire Escobar family.

Angelo’s battle with a rare spinal cord stroke in July 2014 left him paralyzed, yet his spirit and dedication to coaching remained unshaken. He continued to mentor athletes, review game films, and attend games, embodying the very lessons he taught: responsibility, humility, and perseverance.

“Perseverance is something I try to teach,” Angelo once said, a sentiment that resonated with many who knew him. His commitment to education and sports left an indelible mark on the community, earning him induction into the Athletic Halls of Fame of both Palma High School and Santa Cruz High School.

Angelo is survived by his sister, Diane Marguerite Treseler, and family members, including nieces and great-nieces who were a significant part of his life. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on November 24, 2025, at Resurrection Church in Aptos, CA, officiated by his close friend Fr. Ron Shirley.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Palma School, honoring Angelo Ross Jr.’s lifelong commitment to education and coaching. His legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of students and athletes.

This news serves as a reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on a community and the values that endure beyond their time.
