URGENT UPDATE: Advocacy specialist Jeremy Daffern will lead a crucial program titled “Listening Differently” on October 28, 2023, at Wayne State College. The event takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Kanter Student Center’s Frey Conference Suite, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. This free event is open to the public and includes complimentary food.
Daffern, an advocate for the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, emphasizes the importance of understanding the unique experiences of those who are deaf or hard of hearing. “Being deaf or hard of hearing is an experience I can never completely understand,” Daffern stated. He believes that by learning from individuals who navigate a world primarily designed for hearing people, we can foster better relationships and understanding among neighbors.
The program will feature Daffern sharing his personal journey, complemented by insights from ASL interpreter Meghann Cassidy. Attendees will engage in facilitated discussions and have the opportunity to ask questions and explore resources aimed at enhancing awareness about the deaf and hard of hearing communities.
The event will conclude with a unique listening experience from members of the Wayne State Department of Music, providing a poignant reminder of the diverse ways we can connect through sound and silence.
This initiative is sponsored by Wayne State’s public and global health honors students, the service-learning program, and the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: This event promises to be an enlightening experience for all attendees, encouraging a culture of empathy and understanding. For more details, contact Barbara Engebretsen at Wayne State at 402-375-7044 or via email at [email protected].
