Unionville Rowing Club Finds New Home at Octoraro Reservoir

KIRKWOOD, PA — The Unionville Rowing Club (URC) has secured a new practice location at the Octoraro Reservoir, courtesy of a partnership with the Chester Water Authority (CWA). This collaboration provides the high school rowing team a safe and environmentally friendly venue, eliminating the long commute to the Christina River in Wilmington, Delaware. For student-athletes, this significant change not only eases travel but also enhances their training experience.

The Octoraro Reservoir, situated just 25 minutes from Unionville High School, offers a closer and cleaner environment for the team. Previously, the lengthy journey across state lines posed challenges for athletes balancing rigorous academic obligations. Additionally, the Christina River’s unpredictable conditions often led to increased equipment wear and maintenance costs. With the support from CWA, URC is poised for what its leaders describe as a “program-changing moment.”

“We are incredibly excited about this opportunity,” said Head Coach Chris Tolsdorf. “It is a program-changing moment for us—something that is deeply meaningful and will help us to continue to grow and excel. To have a place to row as gorgeous as the Octoraro Lake is a true gift to our kids.”

A Partnership with Purpose

This collaboration between URC and CWA reflects a commitment to community engagement and environmental stewardship. As part of the agreement, student-athletes will engage in various service projects, including shoreline cleanups and volunteering at CWA’s Public Water Independence Day, a community celebration.

“We are thrilled to welcome Unionville’s crew team to the Octoraro Reservoir,” stated Noel Brandon, Chair of the Chester Water Authority Board. “This partnership highlights the power of community and environmental stewardship. The students’ commitment to protecting the reservoir through service is exactly the kind of responsible engagement we hope to encourage.”

Building a Legacy of Excellence

URC, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit led by a board of parent volunteers, has always prioritized personal growth alongside athletic success. “Our primary goal is to create a team where each athlete can discover their true potential,” explained Karin Braack-Cannon, President of the club’s Board. The team competes year-round in prestigious regattas along the East Coast, including the Head of the Schuylkill and the Head of the Charles, and has recently expanded its program to include middle school students.

Notably, about half of Unionville’s athletes proceed to compete at the collegiate level, with many securing scholarships. The club boasts accomplished alumni like Justin Best (Class of 2015), who won gold at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris as part of the men’s coxless four.

Braack-Cannon emphasized gratitude for the partnership: “We are thankful to the Chester Water Authority and its Board for welcoming us to the Octoraro Reservoir. This partnership not only gives our athletes a beautiful and safe place to row but also helps them gain a greater appreciation for the environment and the importance of environmental stewardship.”

A Community Effort on the Water

To ensure a sustainable transition to the Octoraro Reservoir, URC is raising $40,000 to replace its gas-powered coaching launches with electric engines. This initiative aims to protect the environment and preserve the beauty of the lake. Local businesses and residents can contribute by sponsoring the effort, with options to display their logos on team apparel and promotional materials. All donations are tax-deductible.

URC’s transition to the Octoraro Reservoir represents more than just a new location; it embodies a commitment to legacy and community impact. With a new home, an expanding youth program, and a focus on environmental stewardship, the club is well-positioned for future success.
