UNC’s Kelly and Brooks Earn USBWA Preseason Honors After Strong Opener

Senior Reniya Kelly and freshman Nyla Brooks have received notable recognition from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Kelly has been named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award preseason watch list, while Brooks has earned a spot on the Tamika Catchings Award preseason watch list. This acknowledgment follows a commanding performance by the University of North Carolina (UNC) women’s basketball team in their season opener, where they triumphed over N.C. Central with a score of 90-42.

Strong Start for the Tar Heels

The Tar Heels showcased their skills in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Carmichael Arena, filled with elementary school students for Field Trip Day. Courtney Banghart, the team’s head coach, praised the performance of her players, with five scoring in double figures. Notably, Brooks led the team with 15 points, shooting 6-for-12 from the field and 3-for-6 from three-point range, despite missing all three of her free throw attempts. Brooks also contributed four rebounds and two assists during the match.

Joining Brooks in the scoring effort, Indya Nivar, Ciera Toomey, and Elina Aarnisalo each added 13 points, while Nyla Harris chipped in with 12 points. As the season progresses, both Kelly and Brooks are expected to play pivotal roles in UNC’s pursuit of success, especially with challenging non-conference matchups against teams like UCLA and Texas.

Future Challenges Ahead

Coach Banghart has expressed confidence in her revamped roster, which features several newcomers. The team’s ability to score is evident, but concerns remain about their rebounding effectiveness. Brooks’s versatility in scoring both inside and outside can provide valuable options for the Tar Heels, particularly given her freshman status. Kelly’s experience, as one of the upperclassmen, will also be crucial for the team’s dynamics.

The recognition from the USBWA underscores the significance of both players to the program. As UNC aims to return to the NCAA Tournament after last season’s exit in the Sweet 16 against rival Duke, Kelly and Brooks are likely to receive substantial playing time. The season opener offered a glimpse into the team’s potential, but as the schedule intensifies, their performance will face further scrutiny.

Looking ahead, North Carolina’s next game is scheduled for November 6, 2025, against Elon at 19:00 in Chapel Hill. This matchup will serve as another opportunity for Brooks, Kelly, and the rest of the squad to contribute to the team’s success and secure another victory.
