UC Davis Appeals NCAA Decision to Secure Connors’ Extra Season

Rex Connors, a senior defensive back for the UC Davis football team, is fighting for the chance to return for the 2026 season after suffering a season-ending knee injury. Connors, the all-time tackle leader for the Aggies, injured his knee during a Big Sky Conference game against Weber State at UC Davis Health Stadium on September 27. In response, the university has filed a waiver with the NCAA’s Rules Committee for a medical redshirt, which would allow Connors to extend his eligibility.

The NCAA committee initially denied Connors’ request, but UC Davis has since submitted an appeal. The situation is complicated by the fact that Connors participated in five games this season, including the match against Weber State. For a player to qualify for a medical redshirt, they typically must have played in four or fewer games.

The Aggies’ opener against Mercer University on August 23 was interrupted by severe weather and eventually declared a no contest. At the time of the stoppage, UC Davis was leading 23-17. If that game were to count, the Aggies would have a record of 6-1 instead of the current 5-1. UC Davis argues that since they officially played in only four games—excluding the Mercer contest—Connors should be eligible for the medical redshirt.

Head coach Tim Plough expressed his frustration following a recent victory against Northern Arizona on October 11, where the Aggies won 45-24. “I don’t think that’s right,” Plough stated regarding the NCAA’s decision. If the appeal is denied, UC Davis plans to file additional appeals until a favorable resolution is reached for Connors or the outcome of the Mercer game is reconsidered.

“I’m really hopeful we can win this appeal with the NCAA,” Plough emphasized. “We’re going to keep working hard to appeal that, to get that done.” His determination is further highlighted by his statement, “They haven’t dealt with Tim Plough yet. I won’t stop until they give me an answer that I’m OK with.”

In addition to Connors’ situation, fellow senior linebacker Porter Connors is also facing challenges. He has missed several games due to a foot injury sustained during the same contest against Weber State. Plough remarked on the importance of ensuring both players can participate in their final season, saying, “I just want them to be able to play their senior year.”

The Aggies are currently enjoying a bye week but will return to action on October 25, when they face Northern Colorado in a crucial Big Sky Conference match-up. The game is set to kick off at noon PDT.
