Tennessee Appoints Josh Elander as New Head Baseball Coach

Tennessee has swiftly named Josh Elander as the new head coach of its baseball program, following the departure of Tony Vitello to the San Francisco Giants. The announcement was made on Saturday, just days after Vitello’s exit was confirmed on Wednesday. Athletic director Danny White emphasized that Elander was the “undeniable” choice to lead the Volunteers as they continue to build on recent successes.

Elander’s Journey with Tennessee Baseball

Josh Elander has been a pivotal figure in the Tennessee baseball program for the past eight seasons. He joined the coaching staff in 2018 as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, quickly establishing himself as a key contributor to the team’s growth. Following a successful 2022 season, he was elevated to the position of associate head coach, where he worked closely with hitters and catchers while also serving as the third-base coach.

In a statement expressing his gratitude, Elander said, “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity here on Rocky Top. I’m really happy for our players to continue building on what we’ve already built here. The hunt continues, and we’re still excited. Love this place and these people. So thankful for the best that’s yet to come.”

Recent Achievements and Future Goals

Elander steps into the head coaching role at a time when the Volunteers have achieved significant success. Under Vitello’s leadership, the team compiled an impressive record of 341-131 and has made three appearances in the College World Series since 2019. The pinnacle of their achievements came in 2024, when the Volunteers secured their first national championship in baseball.

In addition to their championship victory, Tennessee has participated in the NCAA tournament six times in the last eight years, reaching five Super Regionals. The program has also captured two SEC regular-season titles and two SEC tournament titles, with the most recent championship occurring in 2024. These accomplishments have firmly positioned the Volunteers as a formidable force in collegiate baseball.

As Elander takes the helm, the focus will be on maintaining this momentum and continuing to elevate the Tennessee baseball program. His familiarity with the players and the team’s culture will be vital as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

With a strong foundation already established, the Volunteers look forward to a promising future under Elander’s leadership, aiming to build on their recent successes while fostering a competitive spirit within the program.
