The Pitt Panthers showcased their offensive prowess in a commanding 53-34 victory against North Carolina State over the weekend. This marked the second time this season that the Panthers scored over 50 points, resulting in individual accolades for two standout players. Mason Heintschel earned the title of ACC Rookie of the Week, while his top receiver, Kenny Johnson, was named the ACC Wide Receiver of the Week.
Mason Heintschel’s Record-Setting Performance
In the game, Heintschel delivered an impressive performance, completing 28-of-48 pass attempts for a record-setting 423 yards and three touchdowns. This achievement not only marked the most passing yards for a true freshman in Pitt’s history but also ranks as the sixth-highest single-game total overall. Despite this remarkable feat, Heintschel expressed dissatisfaction with his execution, indicating a drive for continuous improvement.
“Mason played great,” said Pat Narduzzi, head coach of the Panthers. “And, again, he’s upset — he’s in the locker room upset that he missed some throws and could have done this better. But that’s kind of how he is. He’s not worried about what he did well. He’s worried about what he can fix.”
Heintschel’s season statistics reflect his impact since taking over the starting role, completing 65.1% of his passes (95-of-146) for 1,243 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. In addition, he has contributed 122 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Panthers are currently 4-0 with him under center.
Kenny Johnson’s Stellar Contributions
Kenny Johnson also played a pivotal role in the Panthers’ victory, recording seven receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown, averaging 16 yards per catch. Coach Narduzzi praised Johnson’s performance, noting, “I thought Kenny Johnson played lights out. He was unstoppable when he was in there.” Narduzzi added that Johnson’s development from last season has been impressive, highlighting the efforts of the coaching staff in enhancing his skills.
Johnson has accumulated 33 receptions for 502 yards this season, with an average of 15.2 yards per reception and three touchdowns. As the season progresses, he is approaching career highs in all three categories with only eight games played.
The Panthers have demonstrated a balanced offensive strategy, effectively utilizing running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends. Johnson stands out as a key leader in the offense, contributing significantly to the team’s overall success.
