Philadelphia Eagles Appoint Sean Mannion as New Offensive Coordinator

The Philadelphia Eagles have appointed Sean Mannion as their new offensive coordinator, replacing Kevin Patullo. This decision comes after a thorough 16-day search for a candidate to lead the Eagles’ offensive strategy. Mannion, a former NFL quarterback, brings with him a wealth of experience and a notable collegiate background.

Mannion enjoyed a celebrated career at Oregon State University, where he played quarterback from 2011 to 2014. During his time with the Beavers, he set 18 school records, including most passing yards, passing touchdowns, and completions. At one point, his record for career passing yards in the Pac-12 Conference, which stood at 13,600 yards, remained unbroken until 2017.

After completing his college career, Mannion transitioned to the NFL, where he played for nine seasons across three teams: the St. Louis Rams, Minnesota Vikings, and Seattle Seahawks. While primarily serving as a backup quarterback, he participated in 14 games, starting three and accumulating 573 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.

Following the conclusion of the 2023 NFL season, Mannion announced his retirement from playing and sought a position on the coaching staff of the Chicago Bears. He reached out to Matt LaFleur, his former coach, for guidance during the interview process. LaFleur recalled a Zoom session where Mannion impressed him with his presentation skills, ultimately leading to LaFleur recommending Mannion to the Bears. “I think this guy’s going to have a bright future for us and certainly in the coaching profession,” LaFleur stated.

In 2025, Mannion advanced to the role of quarterbacks coach for the Packers. Now, at the age of 33, he has stepped up to become a play-caller for the Eagles, marking his first time in this critical position.

Mannion’s football lineage is notable; his father, John Mannion, is a respected high school football coach, having led teams at Mountainside High School in Beaverton, Oregon, since 2017. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, John received an honor from the American Football Coaches Association in 2023. A cherished memory for Sean comes from when he accompanied his father on a scouting trip at the age of seven, diligently taking notes on a yellow notepad. This notepad was later gifted back to him by his father when Sean joined the coaching ranks.

The Eagles’ decision to recruit a quarterbacks coach from Green Bay has historical significance. The last time this occurred, the Eagles hired Andy Reid, who later became the team’s head coach from 1999 to 2012. The hope is that Mannion’s appointment will yield similar success for the franchise.

As the Eagles move forward with Mannion at the helm of their offense, fans and analysts alike will be eager to see how he implements his vision and strategies in the upcoming season. The team’s confidence in his capabilities reflects a broader commitment to nurturing new talent within the coaching ranks.
