McDaniel Credits Quinn with Guiding Him to Sobriety

In a heartfelt revelation, Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel expressed his deep gratitude to Dan Quinn, the head coach of the Washington Commanders, for playing a pivotal role in his journey to sobriety. As the Dolphins prepare to face the Commanders in Madrid on Sunday, this matchup marks their first meeting as head coaches, nearly a decade after Quinn intervened during a critical time in McDaniel’s life.

Reflecting on their relationship, McDaniel stated on Wednesday, “Dan Quinn holds a special place in my heart and my career. I think he was there at ground zero when I became sober and supported me and gave me the opportunity to continue what I love to do. So for that, I’ll be forever indebted to him.” His words highlight not only the personal connection between the two coaches but also the significant impact Quinn had on McDaniel’s life.

The turning point for McDaniel came on January 4, 2016, when he was confronted by Quinn, along with then-Atlanta Falcons coaches Kyle Shanahan and Raheem Morris. They expressed their concern about his drinking habits, a revelation that McDaniel later acknowledged as accurate. This pivotal conversation occurred shortly after he was dismissed from his position as an offensive assistant with the Houston Texans, which was partly due to how his drinking affected his performance.

McDaniel described the moment he realized the seriousness of his situation, particularly after he had to communicate the coaches’ concerns to his wife, Katie. The disappointment in her eyes motivated him to change his life, leading to his commitment to sobriety. “It was that moment that I said, ‘I will never drink again,'” McDaniel recounted in an episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” in 2023. Since that day, he has maintained his sobriety.

Quinn, speaking from Madrid, expressed pride in McDaniel’s personal growth. He remarked, “For all of us, when there’s an issue, sometimes you don’t want to let someone you’re with know. You’re counting on them, they’re counting on you. But leaning in is the biggest strength you can do.” His emphasis on support and the courage it takes to confront personal challenges resonates deeply with their shared experiences.

As McDaniel prepares for the upcoming game, he acknowledges the profound influence Quinn has had on him, not just as a coach but as a mentor. “I think it speaks to the type of leader he is. I know he really touches every player he coaches from a true, authentic standpoint. I think the Commanders are very fortunate to have him,” McDaniel noted.

The upcoming game promises to be more than just a clash between two teams; it symbolizes a journey of personal triumph and the enduring bonds formed through shared experiences. As both coaches take the field in Madrid, their stories serve as a reminder of the power of support and the importance of addressing personal struggles head-on.
