Lakeview Girls Basketball Aims for Success Under New Coach

Lakeview girls basketball is gearing up for an exciting season, aiming to build on their first winning record in a decade. Under the leadership of new head coach Aaron Whalen, the Wildcats are poised for growth as they navigate the challenges of a small roster and the transition to a new coaching style.

New Leadership Brings Optimism

The Wildcats, who finished last season with a 13-11 overall record and a fourth-place finish in the Central State Activities Association (CSAA) White conference, are adjusting to Whalen’s coaching approach. Whalen, who has extensive experience coaching tournament-level teams in Grand Rapids, is stepping into his first K-12 coaching role.

“Our numbers are small, but they work really hard,” Whalen stated. “They’re very eager to keep working and just play as a team. There’s some nerves there, but I think we’re going to gel and it’ll be good.”

Only one senior, Katelyn Buchner, is part of the squad this year. Buchner expressed optimism about the team’s progress, stating, “I feel like we’re definitely still getting used to each other a little bit. I think once we start fully understanding each other on the court, we’re going to be good defenders and we’re going to be very good on offense, too.”

Building on Last Year’s Success

Last season marked a significant turnaround for Lakeview, as they achieved their first winning season since before 2013. According to Buchner, the team’s success was largely due to their improved ball-handling skills. “The way we were able to carry the ball down the court last season was such a big thing for us that we hope to see this season,” she noted.

The Wildcats return just two of their five starters from last year, with Buchner and junior Madison Bristol leading the way. Despite the lack of experience, both players are confident in their ability to guide newcomers on the team. “We’ll kind of have that little advantage of where we can show the people who haven’t been on the team before what they can expect,” Buchner explained.

Whalen emphasized the importance of creating a positive team culture. “They’ve been very receptive,” he said. “I told them from the beginning that this is about their experience, not mine. We’re trying to make a big deal about every little thing.”

As the Wildcats prepare for the 2023-2024 season, they are focused on developing both their defensive and offensive strategies. “Our defense, I feel, is going to grow tremendously as we continue on throughout the season,” Buchner remarked. “I think it’s going to be a good season and super fun to watch.”

Whalen is equally enthusiastic, looking forward to the team’s competitive spirit. “You can expect us to compete every week and progressively see us gel well together,” he said. “Above all else, we hope to build upon and thrive off of positive experiences all season long.”

With the support of their new coach and a dedicated roster, the Lakeview Wildcats are set to make their mark in the upcoming basketball season, showcasing their determination and resilience on the court.
