Josh Hart Nears Return as Knicks Struggle Without Star Player

Josh Hart is on track to make his long-awaited return to the New York Knicks after missing eight consecutive games due to a sprained ankle. According to Knicks head coach Mike Brown, Hart has progressed to taking contact during practice and is “definitely getting close” to rejoining the lineup. If all goes well, Hart could be back on the court as early as Sunday, March 24, 2024, in a game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Knicks have felt Hart’s absence significantly, posting a 3-5 record during his time off, including a recent 112-107 loss to the Phoenix Suns. Hart, who watched the game from the bench, plays a crucial role in the team’s playmaking efforts, and his return is eagerly anticipated. Without him, the burden has fallen more heavily on Jalen Brunson, who has had to navigate increased defensive pressure.

In the absence of Hart, younger players like Tyler Kolek, Mikal Bridges, and Miles McBride have struggled to fill the void. Brown commented on the situation, stating, “Obviously, we’re trying to give some young guys an opportunity and some guys that aren’t in that situation an opportunity. And they’ve just got to do the best they can.”

Hart suffered the injury on December 25, 2023, and has shared insights on his recovery process through his podcast. He described the sprain as “pretty good,” indicating that he has experienced worse injuries in the past. “If this is my left ankle, I’m back by now. Because I’ve had some good ankle sprains on my left ankle. But I haven’t had many good ankle sprains on my right,” he explained. Hart added, “After this, I won’t have any ligaments to sprain. So I’ll be solid.”

The implications of Hart’s return extend beyond the Knicks’ immediate needs. The Knicks are also keeping a close watch on their draft future, as the Washington Wizards currently control their draft pick. Recently, the Wizards traded for four-time All-Star Trae Young, a move that theoretically should enhance their performance. However, reports suggest that the Wizards plan to rest Young due to ongoing injuries, which could negatively impact their season performance.

Currently, the Wizards hold a 10-27 record, placing them among the bottom four teams in the league. A poor finish would prevent the Wizards from conveying their first-round pick to the Knicks in the upcoming draft, which is significant for New York’s future planning. If the pick does not convey in 2026, it will convert to two second-round selections.

As Hart’s return looms, the Knicks are hopeful that his presence will reinvigorate the team and help them regain momentum in what has been a challenging season. The upcoming game against the Trail Blazers will be crucial for both Hart’s recovery and the Knicks’ quest for improvement.
