The Hampden Academy cooperative hockey team claimed its first Class B North championship since 2003 with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Messalonskee High School on March 15, 2024. The match, held at Alfond Arena, extended into triple overtime, showcasing the determination and skill of a youthful team that has exceeded expectations this season.
Central to the Broncos’ success is a dynamic top line featuring two freshmen, Henry Armell and Aiden MacFarline, alongside sophomore Wyatt Allen. In a pivotal moment, Armell skillfully redirected a floating puck to Allen, who tapped it into the net, securing the game-winning goal. This trio has been instrumental in the team’s scoring, with Armell leading the way with over 30 points this season, followed closely by MacFarline and Allen, each contributing more than 20 points.
Hampden Academy’s roster is notably young, with 11 freshmen and seven sophomores out of a total of 26 players. Coach Zach Wilson has praised the team’s chemistry, stating, “Our freshmen are special. They have great ice vision and have bonded like a family.” The depth added by the freshmen allows the team to field three full lines, enhancing their competitive edge on the ice.
Veteran players, including senior co-captain Aiden Surran, who made 32 saves in the championship game, have also played a crucial role in guiding the younger players. Surran noted the energy the freshmen bring, which has transformed the team’s dynamics. “They make our team so much deeper,” he remarked.
The Broncos have demonstrated remarkable defensive capabilities this season, allowing opponents to score two goals or fewer in 13 games. Coach Wilson credited the strong performance of his defensemen, including senior co-captain Gunnar Weil and junior Brody Miller, as well as the contributions from freshmen Chasen Grant and Reid Dugal. This solid defensive structure has enabled the team to adopt a more aggressive style of play.
Reflecting on the season, Wilson identified a 4-3 overtime loss to Messalonskee on Valentine’s Day as a turning point. “It hurt. After that, the kids buckled down and committed to all three zones. It obviously paid off,” he said, highlighting the team’s resilience and growth.
The Broncos, who boast a record of 14-6-1, are set to face York in the state championship, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. With a blend of youthful talent and seasoned leadership, Hampden Academy is poised to make a strong showing in the upcoming game.
Armell expressed his surprise and excitement about the team’s achievements, stating, “I knew we were going to have a good team, but I never thought we’d be where we are now.” As the team prepares for the championship, the camaraderie and support among players, especially from the senior members, have been pivotal in their journey. “The seniors have been huge for our program,” Coach Wilson concluded, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that defines the Broncos’ success this season.
