Derrick Taylor Revitalizes Blair Basketball with Dynamic Duo

Derrick Taylor, a renowned figure in high school basketball, has transformed the fortunes of the Blair boys basketball team since taking on the coaching role in May. Taylor, who boasts over 500 career wins and has guided teams to multiple championships, stepped in during a challenging period for the Vikings. Following the departure of several key players, including star scorer Timmy Anderson, Taylor faced a significant rebuilding task.

Initially, the prospects looked dim as the team struggled, losing their first four games. However, Blair has since turned its season around spectacularly, achieving a record of 12-5 and starting the Rio Hondo League with two consecutive victories. Last week, the Vikings notched impressive wins against previously unbeaten teams Monrovia and South Pasadena, indicating a resurgence under Taylor’s leadership.

Emergence of New Stars

Central to this turnaround has been the emergence of junior Jaleel Hunter. Previously overshadowed by Anderson, who averaged an impressive 31 points per game, Hunter has stepped up significantly. With Anderson’s transfer to Pasadena, Hunter has taken on a larger role, now averaging 25 points per game. Taylor noted Hunter’s growth, stating, “He runs, shoots, he’s maturing and getting better before our eyes.”

Adding to the team’s firepower, senior guard Joseph Riggins joined the roster after the transfer sit-out period ended in late December. Despite having played only three games, Riggins has made an immediate impact, scoring 34 points in his debut against Muir, followed by 25 points against Monrovia and 28 points against South Pasadena. Taylor remarked on the impressive scoring output, saying, “We have two standout players we can go to.”

Defensive Strategy and Team Dynamics

The Vikings may not boast size, but they compensate with tenacious defense and a strong team ethos. One of the returning players, Joshua Sheran, has been crucial in guarding larger opponents despite his modest height. Taylor praised Sheran’s physicality, indicating that players like him are vital in making up for the team’s lack of height.

Looking ahead, Blair has the opportunity to secure sole possession of first place in the Rio Hondo League. Upcoming matches against Temple City and San Marino will be pivotal. Both games are scheduled for 19:00 local time, presenting a significant challenge for the Vikings who aim to maintain their winning streak.

Taylor acknowledges the importance of these games, stating, “It’s a big week for us. But I think we have the advantage of having the two most talented guys every time we step on the floor.” With Hunter and Riggins leading the charge, the Blair Vikings are positioned to make a serious impact in the league, showcasing the potential of a team revitalized under Taylor’s experienced guidance.
